Mentoring Tomorrow’s Community-Based Partners
The internship program, which has hosted over 65 undergraduate and graduate students from across the U.S., is at the core of the Charities’ community work. Since 1997, the internship program has given students from all research disciplines the opportunity to experience public health research in a practical and community-based setting.
Research projects range from the Healthy Neighborhood Initiatives to the City of Houston Hurricane Preparedness Project to geospatial community mapping projects. The Charities’ team members developed the internship curriculum to expose students to real world applications for addressing community needs through mixed-methods research. The mentoring program helps interns hone research and writing skills they can take back to their home institutions, and gives them a firm foundation in community-based research.
